CoolSculpting: Freeze your fat
How often do you look in the mirror and think how great you look? If you’re like most of us, you probably cringe at a bulge ... or love handles or a muffin top. Diet and exercise can help eliminate many problem areas, but some bulges just won’t budge.
Then what? More Americans are choosing cosmetic procedures to help them look and feel their best. While liposuction can sculpt and shape the waist or other areas, there are drawbacks including bruising, inflammation, the risk of infection and a long recovery time.
King’s Daughters plastic and reconstructive surgeon Bryan Rogers, M.D., is now offering CoolSculpting, a non-surgical fat reduction treatment that uses controlled cooling to eliminate stubborn fat that resists all efforts through diet and exercise. Unlike gastric bypass surgery, the CoolSculpting procedure is not a weight loss solution for those who are obese. Good candidates have noticeable bulges in certain areas including under the chin, neck, abdominal areas, and outer and inner thighs.
“When people first hear about it, they think it is too good to be true,” said Dr. Rogers. “CoolSculpting is safer than liposuction because it requires no surgery, anesthesia or downtime. If they choose, patients can have the quick procedure done on their lunch break and immediately return to work.”
The difference between fat reduction and weight loss
It’s a common misconception that weight loss and fat reduction are the same thing. They’re not. When we lose weight, our fat cells become smaller, but the number of fat cells remains the same. When we gain weight, fat cells become larger again. With the CoolSculpting procedure, fat cells are eliminated and they are gone for good. Whether or not you weigh less, you’ll be thinner and your clothes will fit better, feel better, and look better!
What does it feel like?
As the cooling begins during the first few minutes, the patient will feel pressure and intense cold. This soon dissipates. Many people read, watch videos, work on their laptop, or even take a nap during treatment.
The cooling procedure, which was developed by two Harvard University scientists, selectively freezes a targeted area such as minor fat around the waist. During the next few weeks, fat cells begin to shrink and are removed during normal metabolism while good tissue remains.
While researching, scientists Dieter Manstein, M.D., and R. Rox Anderson, M.D., observed that some children got dimples due to eating Popsicles. They concluded that cold can selectively affect and eliminate fat cells without damaging the skin or surrounding tissue, which is the proven science upon which CoolSculpting is based.
How long is each session?
Dr. Rogers will create an individualized treatment plan tailored to your specific goals. The length of the session will vary depending on the number of areas being treated at one visit. You and Dr. Rogers may schedule additional sessions in order to meet your goals.
When will I see results?
You may start to see changes as quickly as three weeks after treatment, and will experience the most dramatic results after two months. But your body will still flush out fat cells and continue doing so for months after treatment. No supplements or pills are required and you do not have to adopt new diet and exercise habits.
Are there any side effects?
During the procedure, you may experience deep pulling, tugging, numbness or discomfort. Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary numbness, redness, swelling or slight pain.
What happens if I gain weight later?
Many people after seeing the results from their CoolSculpting procedure, take even better care of themselves. However if you do gain weight, you may gain it evenly all over your body, not just in the treated areas.
How much does it cost?
The cost varies depending on your areas of concern, the number of sessions needed and ultimate goals. The procedure is not covered by insurance. With millions of CoolSculpting procedures performed worldwide, it is proven to be a safe and effective treatment.
