Minimally Invasive Surgery
Minimally invasive surgery has dramatically changed the way surgeons work and patients experience surgery. Patients who once required several days of post-procedure hospitalization are now going home and back to their normal lives within a matter of hours with less pain, less scarring and less risk of infection.
King’s Daughters surgeons are committed to using the most advanced techniques available to our patients, with patient safety, comfort and quality outcomes being the major focus. Ask your surgeon whether a minimally invasive approach is right for you.
A New Kind of Minimally Invasive
For the last 20 years, minimally invasive techniques have been changing the landscape of surgery. Now, thanks to the da Vinci Surgical System, minimally invasive surgery has taken a great leap forward.
The da Vinci Surgical System allows surgeons at King’s Daughters to perform more advanced and complex techniques through very small incisions with unmatched precision. Benefits of the da Vinci Surgical System for physicians include:
- Greater surgical precision
- Increased range of motion
- Improved dexterity
- Enhanced visualization of the operative field
- Improved access
Benefits of the da Vinci Surgical System for patients include:
- Shorter hospital stays
- Reduced risk of infection
- Less pain
- Less blood loss
- Smaller scars
- Quicker recovery and return to normal activities
When medication and other non-surgical treatments are not available or cannot relieve symptoms, surgery is the recommended treatment for many conditions that affect the male reproductive organs and urinary tract. These conditions include prostate cancer, ureteropelvic junction obstruction, bladder and kidney cancer and vesicoureteral reflux.
Less invasive and minimally invasive surgical options are available to many men facing urologic surgery. Laparoscopy can be very effective for many routine procedures, but due to the surgical instruments involved, it is not typically used for more complex "class=rolls2" urologic surgeries.
DaVinci surgery, a minimally invasive approach that utilizes the latest in surgical and robotics technologies, is ideal for delicate urologic surgery. This includes prostatectomy, in which the target site is not only tightly confined, but also surrounded by nerves affecting urinary control and sexual function. Using daVinci, the surgeon has a more precise tool to spare surrounding nerves, which may enhance both recovery and clinical outcomes.
When medications and non-invasive procedures are unable to relieve symptoms, surgery remains the accepted and most effective treatment for a range of gynecologic conditions, including cervical and uterine cancer, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, uterine prolapse and excessive bleeding.
Traditional open surgery, using a large incision, has been the standard approach for many gynecological procedures. Newer, minimally invasive approaches have been developed for many procedures, but many complex procedures cannot be performed using these techniques.
The da Vinci system allows King’s Daughters gynecologists to perform complex hysterectomies and other gynecologic procedures through tiny, 1 to 2 centimeter incisions. The system provides them with greater precision and control, better visualization, and improved likelihood of quick recovery and excellent outcomes.
